Background

Jazz is my current fixation, though my interests (both musical and secular) are widespread.  I want to learn to play traditional swing, fusion, rock n roll, flamenco, soul, funk, metal, pop, surf rock, rockabilly, well, just about anything.  I want, more than anything, to learn; whether it be by listening to and playing different styles, or learning to "see" music and play on different instruments, or going to jam sessions, I just want to learn.  That's the big thing.

I've read several books on guitar setup and repair.  I do all my own tech work, so I'm fairly experienced.  I really want to learn how to build guitars from scratch.  If I had the opportunity to apprentice with a luthier, I would take it.

The career fields of live sound technician and studio technician interest me as well, but I have no experience in the booth, and little knowledge of sound as a controlled phenomon.  But, I'm still young.  There are books to be read and experiences to be had.

I'm pretty handy behind a soldering station.  Electronic circuitry has always been a pet interest of mine seeing as my father is an engineer (he wires entire power plants!  Ohm's law is carved into the mantlepiece;  Of course I'd take interest).  I've rewired guitars and amps, and I've built effects units from scratch.  Next, I'd like to build tube amps from scratch.  Pickup winding and microphone construction, are on the way, too.

Imagine, having a complete setup, all made by the hands that use them!  All originating from one single creative apparatus; like an extension of my body.  This is my dream.  I just have a lot to learn.

How do I learn so much when time is so limited?  Mike Wheeler gave me a fitting answer when I took took from him:  he said, "If you can learn it actively go out and do so. There no such thing as useless knowledge."  (this was meant as scolding, but it resonated with me)  I broke a childhood addiction to video games.  I took up reading in my vast fields of interest.  Books line the high shelves of my woodshed.

There is time now.  No more video games.  No more TV.  No more worthless teenage idleness.  No recreational drugs.  No partying.  I'm in the business of learning, and I'm all business.
