Background

Born on the island of Puerto Rico, Hiram (Figgy) Figueroa began his career playing the alto saxophone at the age of 12. He studied with great teachers and unique danza composers like Emiliano Arroyo and Julio Alvarado while he was studying at the Escuela Libre de Musica in Ponce and then with one of the most prominent pianists of the island, Papo Lucca. After playing for a while with local salsa bands he decided to look for different horizons and joined the US Army bands field, where he played all over the world including South Korea, Japan, Germany, and many other countries. While in the US Army he played in salsa and merengue bands in New York, Maryland, Virginia, and in the Washington DC area. After retiring from the US Army he decided to move to Houston Texas where he resides since 2006. He plays alto, tenor, bari sax, flute, and sings in Spanish.
