Background
Roberto Serpas was born and raised in El Salvador. He started taking guitar lessons at the age of eight, and by the time he was fourteen he was already performing in music groups. He moved to Canada in 1983 and since then, his focus has been on music. He attended Mount Royal College to study jazz and transfered to the University of Calgary, where in 1993, he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Music in composition. In 1995 he obtained from the University of Toronto the degree of Master of Music. Once his studies were completed he returned to Calgary to work as a freelance guitarist.
In 1997 he founded with his brother Guillermo the guitar duo " The Serpas Brothers". The duo became a very popular act in Calgary and Edmonton. Their collaboration came to fruition in 1998 with the release of their self-titled CD, "The Serpas Brothers". The CD sold close to 3,000 copies independently and established them as accomplished guitar players. In 2002 Roberto released his first solo album titled "Estival". This album consists of nine solo guitar selections which he wrote and perfected while working as a solo classical guitarist. The album had his concert debut at the Rozsa Centre of the University of Calgary in the spring of 2003. There, he performed these solo pieces as well as additional compositions played with his group. This concert was the beginning of the following project. In the summer of 2003 Roberto begun to work on his third CD, "Morning In Eden". This CD consists of a full ensemble sound produced by the composer himself. This album was released in the summer of 2004 and so far, it has been received with praise.
Roberto currently works as a freelance musician in Calgary where he is well known and has earned the respect of his fellow musicians. He is constantly striving to reach larger audiences, and thanks to those who believe in him, this will soon become a goal fulfilled.
